Course Description

Calligraphy is the most versatile of all lettering styles and provides the foundation to learn many other letterforms. In this course, students will develop skills in lettering for elegance, legibility, and pleasure. Calligraphy is fun, relaxing, and rewarding!

Students apply new skills in everyday life by transforming normal writing into something truly exceptional. Plus, make every event especially elegant with handwritten calligraphy on signs, invitations, envelopes, place cards, menus, announcements and more. Birthdays, anniversaries, bridal showers, weddings, baby showers, garden parties and all the other joyful events that mark our lives would greatly benefit from this art of beautiful writing.

Major Concepts

Since the term calligraphy refers to beautiful hand lettering, we hope that students will learn to appreciate handsome lettering and also achieve some ability in beginning to create your own attractive work. In this course, students start with instructions and assignments in basic letter proportions and spacing. This will be a good foundation for continuing lessons that follow the historical development of these lettering styles: Roman Lettering, Uncial, Black Letters, and the slanted Italic hand.

Good practice is needed to gain lettering skill. The amount of correct practice decides how quickly you advance in lettering speed and beauty.
